Happy Global Family Day
Soham, a fifth-grade student, jumped high up in the air, gripping his parents in a tight hug,
“Mom, dad, wishing you both a Happy New Year and a great year ahead! I will go and meet
my friends in the neighbourhood and greet them too.”
Soham scrambled out in high spirits!
Trying to catch up with his pace, Dad chuckled, “A grand New
Year to you, dear. And wishing you a Global Family Day as
well.”
Soham stopped abruptly, “What’s it, Dad? I didn’t
get you.”
Dad perched Soham on the sofa and
explained, “Don’t you remember that every
new year we visit the farmhouse and
celebrate the occasion? It is not just us,
but we go together in a cluster of around
20 families. This time, Shriya and Aarav
have come down from the US to spend
some time with all of us. Quickly pack
your bags and get ready to zoom off.”
“Wow. It would be so exciting to meet my
cousins. But I would always assume that the occasion
was to celebrate the new year.”
“What’s Global Family Day?” Soham wondered aloud.
Dad clarified, “Global Family Day, also called World Peace Day, spreads awareness of the
need to observe harmony and oneness among all humans, irrespective of their caste, creed,
background, or skin colour through the idea of a ‘global town.’ It encourages the perception of
the earth being a big global family and is celebrated as a Global Day of Peace.”
“The day strives for working towards the betterment of everyone in a society by instilling
virtues of peace and unity, thereby discouraging a negative attitude towards people of other
cultures and nations through harassment, violence, or war.”
Mom continued, “Families that are both physically and mentally healthy, extend unconditional
love and support to every family member, and thus form the infrastructure for the evolution of
peaceful communities that eventually lead to forming a peaceful country, thereby making the
world a healthy and happy place to live in.
